Paul did not fear death

Philippians 1:21-23 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

Past (v. 7)

Fought the good fight – a noble cause

Finished the race – complete the course without wandering

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Kept the faith – a steward who had taken care of his boss’ deposit

Paul would receive the victor’s crown

Laid up – Safely stored up and carefully guarded

The crown would not wear out

It is given by Jesus – the righteous judge

It is given to those who love Christ’s appearing and live in obedience to His will
