The Story – Part 11

The shepherd’s Shepherd

Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell
in the house of the Lord
Forever.

The Character of the Shepherd (v. 1a)

The Lord is my shepherd

The Shepherd has the ability to care for His sheep

The Shepherd is committed to His sheep

The Shepherd loves His sheep

The Provision of the Shepherd (v. 1b-3)

I shall not want

Not lacking

Utterly contented

He makes me to lie down in green pastures

A sheep will lie down only if they are free from …

Fear

Friction

Pests

Hunger

He leads me beside the still waters

Jeremiah 2:13 For My people have committed two evils:
They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.

He restores my soul

Psalm 42:11 Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake

Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.

The Protection of the Shepherd (v. 4-5)

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me

The valleys are necessary to bring the sheep to new pastures

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me

The rod was used to protect, discipline, and examine

The staff was used to guide the sheep

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies

Mesa – Table

You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over

The Hope of the Shepherd (v. 6)

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life

Lamentations 3:22-24 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I hope in Him!”

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever

We have the current hope of the Shepherd’s presence in our life and the future hope of an eternity with the Shepherd
