Worth the Effort

Pastor John Fenlason September 3, 2017

II Timothy 3:15-17

II Timothy 3:15-17 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The Authority of the Bible (v. 16)

II Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The Benefits of the Bible

It teaches us how to be saved (v. 15)

The Bible points us to Jesus

John 20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

The Bible shares God’s plan for reconciliation

John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

The Bible gives us God’s promise of His faithfulness

I John 5:11-13 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

It teaches us how to live (v. 16-17)

Doctrine – teaching

Reproof – convicting of misbehavior

Correction – restoration to original path or condition

Instruction in righteousness – training up

Doctrine focuses upon knowledge – Reproof, Correction, and Instruction focus upon life change

Complete – mature

Equipped – being given the ability to live a godly life and serve God and others

In order to act upon something, you must believe that it is both trustworthy and beneficial

Learning and applying the Bible is worth the effort
