This week we are continuing to look at the principles Jesus shared in the Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew 5-7. In Matthew 5:38-42 Jesus shares that we are to be willing to give up our personal rights in order to honor God in the way we live. He shares four examples of giving up our right to dignity, security, liberty and property. He is challenging us to choose not to seek revenge when we have been harmed.
In verses 43-48 Jesus shares the elements of a proper response to our enemy. We are to bless them, do good to them, and pray for them. These actions will greatly affect our attitude toward our enemy. It is easy to love our friend, but how are we doing with the challenge to love our enemy?
I hope you will join us this Sunday as we further examine these counter-cultural principles.
Share a story of a response (yourself or someone you know) to mistreatment by others. How did that response demonstrate (or not demonstrate) the principles that Jesus calls us to as His followers?
