Psalm 34 was written by David when he was in a very difficult situation. He feigned insanity in order to escape. In the battle David recognized that God was the one who protects us and that we are to praise God at all times – even in the storm
Psalm 34:1-3 I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together. (NKJV)
Do we praise God at all times? It is easy to praise Him when we are on the mountaintop. It is not quite as easy when we are in the valley. Job is a great example of praising God in the valley. In Job 1:21 he blesses the name of the Lord. This praise took place right after he lost his property and his children. David could praise God as a young shepherd, when he was hiding from King Saul, and when he was in danger from an enemy. We can praise God in the storm.
Psalm 34:4-7 I sought the Lord, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces were not ashamed.
6 This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.
The faithfulness of God seen in these verses supply the reason we can praise Him in every situation. David saw the hand of God as he faced Abimelech just as he had seen the hand of God in other circumstances. He could praise God because he had seen God work previously and was confident that God would continue to be faithful, even in the storm.
We face the same challenge. Just like David, we are called to praise God in every situation. Just like David, we must trust God, even in our deepest valleys. He is faithful and we can trust Him.
